Publisher Description

A mother struggling to repress her violent past,
A son struggling to grasp his violent future,
A father blind to the danger that threatens them all.

When the winds of war reach their peninsula, will the Matsuda family have the strength to defend their empire? Or will they tear each other apart before the true enemies even reach their shores?

High on a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice. For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empire’s enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name ‘The Sword of Kaigen.’

Born into Kusanagi’s legendary Matsuda family, fourteen-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: to master his family’s fighting techniques and defend his homeland. But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigen’s alleged age of peace, Mamoru realizes that he might not have much time to become the fighter he was bred to be. Worse, the empire he was bred to defend may stand on a foundation of lies.

Misaki told herself that she left the passions of her youth behind when she married into the Matsuda house. Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hid away her sword, along with everything from her days as a fighter in a faraway country. But with her growing son asking questions about the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion looming across the sea, and her frigid husband grating on her nerves, Misaki finds the fighter in her clawing its way back to the surface.

Loudly Crying Face“First off: READ THIS BOOK. My experience: Immediately, I felt immersed in the setting - a small village tied to their old traditions and closed off to the rest of the world. A mother with a past she can’t speak of; a son questioning the history he was taught due to outside influences. The story is compelling - an impending war with everything in the balance… M.L. Wang’s writing was equally masterful and beautiful. Her range was truly impressive - from descriptive action scenes to gutting scenes of loss and coping with the atrocities of war. I could not put this book down and was fully invested in the story and characters. The fighting sequences were some of the most well-written that I’ve ever read. The magic system was well-crafted and allowed for inventive execution of awe-inspiring techniques. This was such an emotional and heart-wrenching read. There were so many complex themes that this book took on and they were all handled with such class and precision. The characters aren’t the only ones that achieved personal growth. In reading this, I think I did as well, and that puts this book in a special class. I can’t recommend it enough.”

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“This was a roller-coaster for my heart. I cried and cheered throughout the whole book. I really loved the characters and their growth. And the world was amazing! I was so impressed with the fight scenes and how I could picture them as if I was watching a movie. My one problem was the villain that was thrown in at the very end. It was a jarring "big bad" reveal at the end, and it felt like it diminished the importance of the horrific battle and tyrannical government plot.”
