A young girl discovers an infinite variety of worlds in this standalone tale in the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Wayward Children series from Seanan McGuire, Lost in the Moment and Found
.

Welcome to the Shop Where the Lost Things Go.

If you ever lost a sock, you’ll find it here.
If you ever wondered about a favorite toy from childhood... it’s probably sitting on a shelf in the back.
And the headphones that you swore this time you’d keep safe? You guessed it….

Antoinette has lost her father. Metaphorically. He’s not in the Shop, and she’ll never see him again. But when Antsy finds herself lost (literally, this time), she discovers that however many doors open for her, leaving the Shop for good might not be as simple as it sounds.

And stepping through those doors exacts a price.

Lost in the Moment and Found tells us that childhood and innocence, once lost, can never be found.

Thumbs Up“Please pay attention to the author’s note and content warnings. I’ve been audiobooking through these (pardon the pun), and I had to move to the ebook and speed read from chapters 2 to 6 or so. This is a rough read if you have any experience with childhood traumas. // Here in a nexus of doors, we finally get the answer that the doors are just doors that know when we fit. The worlds aren’t inherently moral or immoral, it’s simply a matter of rules and the classification is insufficient. Vineta even argues that the doors are all good for the children who find them, because the kids all believe they *can’t* go home, in whatever ways that can mean. But… this is Vineta we’re taking about. What Antsy experiences is a metaphorical extension of her life so far and the trauma that haunts her home. There’s magic to soften the blow, but in the way that from 5, she’s forced to grow up too fast, so too does the nexus rip away her childhood too soon. And just like trauma does, it makes her believe she’s the one at fault because she tried to save herself, and adults fail to give her the proper supports. And don’t even get me started on generational trauma. That’s for book 9, lmao.”

About Seanan McGuire

Seanan McGuire is the author of the Hugo, Nebula, Alex and Locus Award-winning Wayward Children series, the October Daye series, the InCryptid series, and other works. She also writes darker fiction as Mira Grant. Seanan lives in Seattle with her cats, a vast collection of creepy dolls, horror movies, and sufficient books to qualify her as a fire hazard.
