Publisher Description

"A Ursula Le Guin-like grace... Ten out of 10." —New York Times

In Adrian Tchaikovsky's Elder Race, a junior anthropologist on a distant planet must help the locals he has sworn to study to save a planet from an unbeatable foe.

Lynesse is the lowly Fourth Daughter of the queen, and always getting in the way.

But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she’s an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). Although she still gets in the way, she understands that the only way to save her people is to invoke the pact between her family and the Elder sorcerer who has inhabited the local tower for as long as her people have lived here (though none in living memory has approached it).

But Elder Nyr isn’t a sorcerer, and he is forbidden to help, and his knowledge of science tells him the threat cannot possibly be a demon…

“"I think healing begins when you finally recognize there is no moving on. Only moving forward." The description of this novella does not do justice for how truly interesting it is. In Elder Race, we follow a Princess trying to prove her worth to her family and kingdom. She hears of a demon wreaking havoc in a nearby kingdom, so she jumps into action by calling upon an ancient sorcerer from legends. Nyr, the sorcerer, is not what people believe him to be, but he is by far the most interesting character I've encountered. He's constantly battling deep emotional feelings and struggles while trying to view what’s happening around him analytically. His development and transformation is where the story shines. "I feel as though the emotional parts of my mind are like a cellar in which I have locked dead things, and when I open the door . . . maggots, carrion flies, flooding out. And yet I must, because the latch and hinges are strained already." This was my first Tchaikovsky book. I am very impressed with his prose and storytelling. There is plenty more to read, but I already feel he will become one of my favorite authors.”
“This is the most unique combination of fantasy and science fiction I’ve ever read - where the genre literally changes based on which character’s POV you’re reading. I also really liked the exploration of how words can shape our thinking and how we see the world. It’s a relatively short read, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
