A Fate Inked in Blood

By Danielle L. Jensen
A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king—while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son—in the first book of a Norse-inspired fantasy romance series from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.

Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband’s back.

Freya’s dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region’s jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son, Bjorn. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: She possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood, which makes her a shield maiden with magic capable of repelling any attack. It was foretold such a magic would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath the one who controls the shield maiden’s fate.

Believing he’s destined to rule Skaland as king, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders Bjorn to protect her from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. The greatest test of all, however, may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

Slightly Smiling Face“A fast paced fantasy. I didn't like Freya so much. I'm almost guessed the twist at around 75%”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Could not put this down! I thought I’d listen instead of read my physical copy because it’s sooooo pretty… but I NEEDED to hold it while immersing myself in this story. Oh the journey of the unfated… I love Freya and Bjorn… I love the magic system and the ties to Nordic lore and mythology. The superstition, the ceremony, the continuous need to conquer the challenges put in her path. Freya is a badass, and I’m both anxious and desperate to see what happens next after that cliffhanger! Highly recommend!!”

Thinking Face“So I will say this book both was what I hoped for yet disappointed me at the same time. I really enjoyed the magic of this world, how the Norse gods can grant their magic through mortal children and give them access to abilities in their blood. I was really interested in the powers and how those gods magic can manifest into different ways, I was fascinated and eager to learn how all the different gods magic can be granted. I also liked the setting during the Viking era, Freya as a character had moments where I felt for her, the feeling of being used by people who are supposed to care about you and getting tired of being seen that way added much more believability to her as a main character. Now, I want to list some of the things I didn't like about the book. In my opinion, I felt like the relationship between Bjorn & Freya was a bit too insta love for me. The middle half of the book did drag a bit, and I felt like it slowed down during those parts. Freya's decisions did frustrate me at certain points, like when she kept defending the people who hurt her and used her. Overall, I really enjoyed this release, I am excited for the second book to come out!”
